A developer named Brandon Thomas and the ArtCraft team published seven open-source apps on GitHub that copy the workflow of Adobe apps. They were written in Rust with Claude Opus 5.5, and all are free. They are early-stage, so test before you switch.

1. What happened

The project says the apps are clean-room builds. That means built from public specs and observed behavior, with no Adobe code or assets.

Do this today: open github.com/storytold and look at the repos.

4. Where to start

  1. 01

    Start with PhotoCraft

It is the flagship and has the biggest community.

  2. 02

    Then try FilmCraft or LightCraft

    They are next in popularity.

  3. 03

    Test on a throwaway project

Open the repo, read the README, and use a copy of a real file.

5. Read this before you switch

These are early-stage tools. Reports describe them as alpha. They do not match the Adobe apps feature for feature yet. Test with copies of your files before you cancel anything.

Adobe product names are trademarks of Adobe Inc. This project is not affiliated with Adobe. Most repos list an Apache-2.0 license. Check each repo for its own license before you use it.
